Vogel, L. Z.; Savva, Stavroula (1993-12-01). "Atlas personality". British Journal of Medical Psychology. 66 (4): 323–330. doi: 10.1111/j.2044-8341.1993.tb01758.x. ISSN 2044-8341. PMID 8123600. In To Hold Up the Sky, Cixin Liu takes us across time and space, from a rural mountain community where elementary students must use physicas to prevent an alien invasion; to coal mines in northern China where new technology will either save lives of unleash a fire that will burn for centuries; to a time very much like our own, when superstring computers predict our every move; to 10,000 years in the future, when humanity is finally able to begin anew; to the very collapse of the universe itself. Contraction (1985, tr. John Chu) - that's the kind of story I want to read, ming-bending idea about what will happen when the universe contracts instead of expanding. 10/5 The ancient Titan was also seen as a great leader and was well respected by his elders, despite being of the second generation of the old gods. Even his aunts and uncles followed him in battle in the war against the Olympians. Why Does Atlas Carry the World? A few small silhouettes walked past the window. They formed a circle on a ridge between two fields and squatted down, inscrutable. He knew these were his students—as long as they were nearby, he could detect their presence even without seeing them. This intuition had developed in him over a lifetime, and it was particularly keen now that his life was drawing to a close.

I found some clues in the poster collection – there were images of women carrying artillery troops and machine guns, women portrayed as factory workers and engineers, they were the so-called “Iron Girls” in the first few decades of Communist China (50s – 80s), and largely appeared in propaganda campaigns. These tough-and-masculine-women portrayals remind me of the famous American wartime poster “We Can Do It!”, both similarly served the purpose of lifting national spirit and boosting worker morale. Atlas is heard moaning under the weight of the sky when Percy and his friends find themselves at Mount Othrys. Also, when Percy falls out of the sky onto a strange island, it is discovered that the girl on the island, Calypso, is another daughter of Atlas. To Hold Up The Sky is Liu's second collection of short stories, the first being The Wandering Earth, which I owned and have yet to read. As with pretty much most collections, the short stories here could either be a hit or a miss. I would say that the majority of the stories hovered around 3-stars for me. Some of the stories were almost too profound or high concept. The few that I really liked and hence rated 4-stars are the ones which resonated with me more on an emotional level or have a powerful message to humanity. So moved with gratitude towards Heracles, Atlas decided to give him the secrets of Astronomy. For, while he was but a shepherd, Atlas was also quite a scientific mind. According to the ancient Greeks, it was Atlas who discovered the spherical nature of the sky, and so passed on to Heracles this knowledge, and how to use it to navigate the seas. This was another weird one, but it had its good parts, particularly in the latter half. It had a bizarre blend of the ridiculous and the grim that I’m not sure if I liked or disliked. There was a pretty dire situation facing humanity in this story that I didn’t think was treated with enough weight or urgency. It was an interesting concept, but I wish it had been explored further.

Aeneid iv.247: " Atlantis duri" and other instances; see Robert W. Cruttwell, "Virgil, Aeneid, iv. 247: 'Atlantis Duri'" The Classical Review 59.1 (May 1945), p. 11. What does "Atlantis" mean? And why is the Space Shuttle Atlantis named after something underwater?". 8 July 2011. The Lightning Thief | The Sea of Monsters | The Titan's Curse | The Battle of the Labyrinth | The Last Olympian stars - Philosophical and impactful. The scary proposition of what the future might be when humanity's collective memories and consciousness are just programmes in a supercomputer, and people giving up reality for imagined lives in quantum memory. Atlas was the son of the Titan Iapetus, brother of Cronus. Iapetus, also known as “the piercer” was the god of Mortality. The mother of Atlas was Clymene, also known as Asia. Another of the elder Titans, Clymene would go on to become a handmaiden of the Olympian god, Hera, as well as personify the gift of fame. Iapetus and Clymene also had other children, including Prometheus and Epimetheus, the creators of mortal life on Earth. What is the Myth of Atlas About? Gunnell, Terry Adrian (2005). "Hof, Halls, Goðar and Dwarves: An Examination of the Ritual Space in the Pagan Icelandic Hall". Cosmos 17: 3–36. It could be that Atlas was chosen because of his superior knowledge of the stars, making him an expert at navigation and travel. Even today, a military leader with a superior understanding of troop movement is more likely to win a battle. Why Did Atlas Give Hercules the Golden Apples?

Raising women’s right was a significant theme of the revolutionary propaganda in China from the 1950s to the 1970s. Attempting to achieve gender equality is considered as one of the least controversial legacies of Mao ZeDong. As an inspiration, his celebrated quote “women hold up half the sky” was widely promoted across the country. Rumour says the statement was made to respond an article published on a local Women’s Federation Magazine in Gui Zhou province in 1955. As women has become a valuable work force in China’s rapid industrialisation development, the article proposed equal pay for equal work between men and women. Interestingly, at the same time, the second-wave feminist movement was taking place across the pacific ocean, and the feminist symbolism in “women hold up half the sky” even received affirmation from western left-wing intellectuals. Perseus had been traveling on his winged boots when he found himself in the land of Atlas. The garden of Atlas was a beautiful place, with lush lands, thousands of cattle, and trees of gold. Perseus begged of the Titan, “Friend, if high birth impresses you, Jupiter is responsible for my birth. Or if you admire great deeds, you will admire mine. I ask for hospitality and rest.”It has been noted that the beams that support the roof of the house are known as dvergar ("dwarfs") in Old Norse. This has been connected by some scholars to Austri, Vestri, Norðri and Suðri, suggesting that, as in other cases, the home acts like a microcosm, in which the roof is equated with the sky. [6] The Village Teacher (2000, tr. Adam Lanphier) - an ode to knowledge and how it can save lives. The teacher's story moved me to tears, but the alien involvment seemed to me too artificial. 3/5 The recurent theme is the humans' place in the universe, insignificant and yet, at the same time, so important.
