Some recipes call for just sour cream in the topping but I add the egg as it helps set it like a custard. Don't underestimate the power of observing really basic parts such as the stem or a seed. Kids love looking at the different parts up close. Give them time to observe and provide prompts if needed. If you turn over an apple and look at the bottom, that is called the calyx. Before the fruit formed, it was an apple blossom. The flower had small green leaf like structures under the petals called sepals.

Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F)/180°C fan-forced. Grease and line your cake tin with baking paper. Measure the cream in a jug. Add the egg, sugar and brandy (or vanilla) and mix well until smooth. Slowly pour this mixture evenly over the apples, letting it seep through the layers.Put the tin of pie apples into a bowl. Add the flour and spices for the apple filling and mix well. Spoon the apple mix over the baked base. The apple will only just cover the base, move it around with a spoon until you have a more or less even covering. Store this slice in the fridge. It will last for 4-5 days. If you find that the base is too hard at first it will soften up over the next few days. I find I like it best on the 4th day! This apple slice has to cool and then be chilled completely and then sliced as it needs to firm up completely before eating. It must be served chilled and tastes even better after a day or two in the fridge! Why do apples turn brown? I bet your curious child has asked you that at one point or another. And perhaps he also challenged with a follow-up question – how do you prevent the apple from turning brown? would probably make a nice double batch of this especially when apples in season so that only turning oven on once. Having a control variable is necessary so that you can compare it to the other apples that have been submerged in various liquids. If you child is loosing interest, point out something interesting for them to look at such as a brown spot on the flesh. Or ask them why they think something is the way that it is. The recipe below calls for a small amount of preparation, some stove-top simmering and baking. Preparing and combining the ingredients takes less than 15 minutes and the oven does the rest of the work. When I first saw a version of this recipe on The WHOot I could not believe you could make a tasty slice with only five ingredients.

She told me she stopped cooking around the time they moved south (when my husband was about 8, maybe), because the village didn’t do gas for cookers. She hates electric cookers and so, she stopped cooking! I suppose that’s as good an excuse as any! The hissing noise was our hot water tank leaking and steam was rising from the kitchen floor. Water was rapidly flooding into the lounge room. This apple filling uses canned apples to mimic the flavours and textures of real apple pie. Here’s what you’ll need: So we’re talking different apples, different flours, different sugars, different fats, different ingredient ratio and with or without a topping – there are so many ways you can go with it. The water and salt on the surface of the apple slice interfere with oxygen reaching the fruit’s surface and therefore slowing down oxidation. Final Words on the Apple Oxidation ExperimentTo bump up the flavour, we add a touch of cinnamon, nutmeg and fresh lemon zest to the apples. Hello apple pie filling! The final touch, is a hefty layer of sour cream (full fat only please) and a generous sprinkling of cinnamon sugar. Different varieties of apples will have distinct tastes. If your kids find that one is too tart, they may enjoy a sweeter type. I'm Sarah the Aussie home cook, I love making delicious, family-friendly meals and treats, using fresh produce from my home veggie garden whenever possible. If you are using home stewed apples rather than tinned, drain them to ensure that there isn't a lot of liquid or it will make the slice too wet.

You can, and it's safe to eat once frozen and defrosted. But you definitely lose some of the lovely crunchiness. Looking for more yummy sweet recipes? Bake at 180 C for 35 to 40 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the middle comes outYummo!! Who would have thought sour cream and apple could taste so yummm…Moorish!!. Easy to make, tastes great. Thanks this would be my go to dessert recipe now! Canned/ tinned apples: make for an easy slice. A 400gm (14oz) tin is the perfect amount. Look for sliced apples for pies and desserts. At a pinch you could try using apple pie filling but I have not tested the recipe with this alternative.
