Last friday I made up my mind and might have set the bargain record for a brand new pair after a little negotiation. That bullet was making me crazy... Ended up buying a pair within two weeks of this post if I'm not mistaken]

The appearance of the bookshelf speaker consists of a beautifully crafted hand-veneered mahogany/walnut, an inset front plate and a traditional tungsten fabric grille. This makes the updated Denton a classic update to the original speaker. Yeah, I've been thinking hard about it. I need to find a way to scrounge up enough money for those. Any idea how long they'll be on sale at that price? They are also fairly forgiving on positioning and power levels. Positioned close to walls the small port size means there’s minimal boomy bass. But yes, they do sound better with a little free space around them. What you get with the new Denton is a decidedly retro looking loudspeaker boasting a beautifully veneered Mahogany cabinet, inset front baffle and traditional cloth grille. But beneath that 1960s fascia things inside are very different indeed. The original model’s paper cone mid/bass unit is replaced by Wharfedale’s own 21st century 125mm woven Kevlar driver while the tweeter is a bang-up-to-date 25mm textile soft dome.

Wharfedale Linton

Highs are processed by a woven soft dome treble unit with high flux ferrite magnet, engineered for smooth, detailed HF extension. Drive units are combined by a near-audible crossover resulting in a coherent, seamless musical output that is both engaging and natural in its rendition of any source material. Denton 80 vs Denton 85 was considering NAD C 326BEE or C 375BEE but since plenty of them have power module issues I have dropped those two)

Thankfully they are now boxed up and waiting for the carrier to collect and take them off to the new owner.

Thank You!

Denton 85th Anniversary is a two-way speaker in the classic bookshelf tradition, beautifully hand veneered in Mahogany by Wharfedale cabinet makers with an inset front baffle and traditional Tungsten cloth grille. Also, I need to read up a bit on them, review-wise, so I can make sure I'll be able to power them with my Fisher 800C if needed. My 2000x needs some work, plus I love the sound of my Fisher anyway, but damn, I want a pair of those things. I've been saying how I can use a smaller, modern alternative to my big W90's, and I was thinking about a pair of B&W DM23's if I can find some, but I'd rather have those Dentons. For: Good build quality; deep bass for such tiny boxes; good sense of rhythm; prefers more upbeat music The original Denton was well known for its warm, rich and natural sounding character and the 85th Anniversary Edition retains that character but imbues it with an open, detailed performance that will entice you to explore your whole music collection.

Mrs. said, have we still got the big'uns? by the big'uns she meant Monitor Audio RS6s. I replied, "up in the loft". After being covered in cobwebs I placed the MAs and switched on and... OMG, I'd forgotten how good they sound. They were everything I expected the Dentons to be: Cohesive, balanced and just downright musical. All-in-all it was a good experience, and one thing it's confirmed: My current system for the money is blinding. The name Linton will ring like a bell to audiophiles of a certain age – myself included, as my father had a pair of 3XPs in the seventies. It was the poor man’s high-end loudspeaker; a true three-way with a real wood cabinet and a warm, musical sound. The new one is far larger, however, and instead of paper and polymer for its bass and mid drivers, it uses woven Kevlar in 200mm and 135mm sizes respectively. Also, the old soft-dome tweeter is now a 25mm fabric dome with a metal grille over it. Crossover frequencies are 630Hz and 2.4kHz. The Dentons came with an introduction price of 750 euro which currently ranges between 599 and 650 Euro in retail. Wharfedale’s ownership has passed to the China-based IAG group – but that 80 years of experience means making damn fine loudspeakers is imprinted in their DNA.

Seamless musical output

Multiple enhancements, along with the strong tie to one of the finest legacy's in audio, ensure music lovers of all stripes will want this model. The bass unit boasts a standard-setting woven Kevlar cone mounted on a ridged die-cast chassis, while the drive units are paired with a meticulous crossover to achieve seamless balance and performance. Denton's cabinet walls utilize Wharfedale's distinguished sandwich wood construction, leading to improved panel resonance, decreased internal vibrations, and diminished colorations. The end result: An alluring compact loudspeaker that fuses utmost craftsmanship, pure sonics, and incredible value. Wharfedale wouldn't have it any other way. Fire them up and the first thing you notice is the impressive timing and amazing amount of detail they manage to excavate.
