Description

A review about the cognitive advantages of chewing gum by Onyper et al. (2011) found strong evidence of improvement for the following cognitive domains: working memory, episodic memory and speed of perception. However the improvements were only evident when chewing took place prior to cognitive testing. The precise mechanism by which gum chewing improves cognitive functioning is however not well understood. It’s highly controversial and has been claimed to cause a range of conditions, from headaches to obesity to cancer. Although the formulation of gum bases is considered proprietary information for industry competitors, three main components make up all gum bases: resin, wax, and elastomer. Resin (ex. terpene) is the main chewable portion. Wax softens the gum. Elastomers add flexibility. The molecular composition of gum base is very similar to that of plastics and rubbers. Preservatives. These are added to extend shelf life. The most popular choice is an organic compound called butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT).

As a sort of chewing gum consisting of long-chain polysaccharides, bubblegum can typically exhibit linear and nonlinear viscoelastic behaviors. [5] Therefore, the distinct deformations under chewing can be affected by shear rate, shear strain, and shear stress applied through teeth. [6] Based on these, it is helpful to characterize the intrinsic rheological properties of chewing gums for future improvement and optimization of commercial products’ texture and chewiness. [7] In 1996, Susan Montgomery Williams of Fresno, California, set the Guinness World Record for largest bubble gum bubble ever blown, which was 26 inches (66cm) in diameter. However, Chad Fell holds the record for "Largest Hands-free Bubblegum Bubble" at 20 inches (51cm), achieved on 24 April 2004. [11] Tourism [ edit ] Heller, Chris (7 January 2017). Gum does increase saliva production, but frequent gum chewing is probably not the best way to treat dry mouth,” Dr. Kahn notes. Frequent sips of water can be equally effective. And there are medications you can take to increase your natural saliva production. Machiulskiene, Vita; Nyvad, Bente; Baelum, Vibeke (2001). The acid eats away at the hard enamel surface of your teeth, a process that creates holes in the enamel and pathways for bacteria to infect your tooth’s dentin layer and pulpal tissues. Eventually, as your tooth decays, it may require a root canal to save it.
