Description

The FANTASTICs system, which is also used in the teaching of reading, allows children to identify the nine elements that all text types are comprised of. When pupils are familiar with these nine elements, they are able to ensure that they are incorporated into their writing. The FANTASTICs help children to sharpen their understanding of their own and others’ writing by encouraging them to be observant and reflective. The Writing Rainbow poster is a classroom resource that encourages interaction and the collection of ideas during the writing process. The Writing Rainbow offers a complete view of ‘The Write Stuff’ methods and systems. The research of Jane Considine (The Write Stuff) was a development initiative in 2018, to enhance current provision and practice. The focus remains on a love of story, enrichment and language. Children are immersed in a key text, revealing plot points one at a time through the 'slow reveal'to maintain the excitement of revealing the story. This story forms the basis of the wider project and curriculum enrichment. We add clarity to the mechanics of the teaching of writing.

It encourages pupils by stretching and challenging independent writing. The Large Writing Rainbow symbols are a set of 27 brightly coloured classroom resources, measuring 28.5 cm in diameter, that mirror the writing lenses found on Jane Considine’s Writing Rainbow. By using these lenses, teachers can focus on a particular aspect of the Writing Rainbow. Pupils can then incorporate that lens in their planning and writing activities during the lesson. This allows them to become more confident on the range and repertoire of aspects to showcase in their independent writing. At St Clement’s we have adopted ‘The Write Stuff’ by Jane Constantine to bring clarity and consistency to the mechanics of writing and to enable our children to write effectively and coherently. As a school, all children from Year 1 to Year 6 learn to write through the Write Stuff approach. This was developed by teacher and leading English consultant, Jane Considine. It is a fun, creative and rigorous approach to develop children’s writing. This approach allows children to apply basic skills, vocabulary and grammar knowledge to write effective sentences, which are full of impact and keep the reader interested. In Reception, children are immersed in a language rich environment, with stories at thecore of their learningand the Early Years Curriculum. Even before theycan write, the childrenare securing their understanding of words and their meanings through 'Picture Power'. The FANTASTICS are used to focus the children's ideas about what can be seen, igniting their senses and broadening their vocabulary. The children are also taught ambitious word choicesthrough 'Word Collecting'activities. We aim to make handwriting an automatic process that does not interfere with creative and mental thinking.
