Following exposure with British magazines and newspapers and a successful performance on BBC Radio 1, [6] Bloc Party received a contract offer from Parlophone. The band members declined the opportunity because they did not want to work for a major record label and instead signed a recording contract with East London indie label Wichita Recordings, [7] chosen because it did not want to stamp its agenda on the conception of records. [8] Frontman and chief writer Okereke wanted Silent Alarm to emphasise the importance of finding pleasure in small mundane things, because "those are the sort of things that can be incredibly touching". The album was born out of "a nagging youthful urgency" and the realisation that responsibility has to be taken for the first time as a young adult. [9] Before recording started, Okereke attended singing lessons to open up his voice. [8] Recording [ edit ] Hot Press staff (8 January 2006). "Critics' singles and albums of the year". Hot Press. The Official UK Albums Chart: 2005". ChartsPlus. Milton Keynes: Musiqware (Special Issue, January 2006): 4. As both the band and album’s names imply, Silent Alarm is an overtly political album. Bloc Party fare better than many other bands that dip into that fray, but the results are still mixed: the well-intentioned no-blood-for-oil sentiments of “Price of Gas” are heavy-handed, but “Helicopter”‘s Bush-bashing and the antiwar “Pioneers” (“We promised the world we’d tame it/What were we hoping for?”) are relatively subtle, and work fairly well as political pop manifestos.
