About this deal

Kitchen knives are categorised according to their shape and size, with certain options suiting certain tasks best. These are the main types:

Whilst the Shark - Bushcraft Knife was designed to be a broad spectrum ergonomic multi-purpose, working tool, it was nonetheless designed specifically with the Professional Bushcraft and Survival Instructors in mind. It was designed for maximum efficiency in each of the many tasks a knife of this type would normally be expected to do. Bread knife: The long blade with a serrated edge is made to cut through loaves without tearing the bread or squashing it. It is designed to inject high-pressure gas into a wound cavity through a hole in the blade, rather than using gas to propel the blade forward. This is said to expand and freeze the wound, inflicting more damage to the target. On Wasp Injection, the knife’s manufacturer states: The Welt also protects the Stitch line from the Razor Sharp Cutting Edge when sheathing and unsheathing the knife. Key specs – Types included: 3.5in paring knife, 4in utility knife, 8in carving knife, 6in cook’s knife, 8in bread knife; Warranty: Lifetime

The Full Tang has been given a well contoured stabilised wooden handle that fits comfortably in the hand, allowing you to work with the knife for extended periods of time without causing muscle fatigue or blisters.

Vegetable knife: Also called a paring knife, this small knife is good for detailed jobs such as seeding chillies and trimming brussel sprouts. These are some bold claims, but how does the knife’s injection system fare in reality? Unsurprisingly, there doesn’t appear to be any video footage of SCUBA divers stabbing sharks with the WASP, but several YouTubers have tested the knife on ballistic gel, plastic bottles, and watermelons to show how the system works: A knife that does not have this design consideration could cause any forwardThrusting/stabbing forces to run to the sides of the knife's handle and out into the sides of the Spear Shaft. The joint, where the knife is tied to the wooden spear shaft, will take all lateral forces, which can easily then cause the binding to fail at this point. The Belt Loop is designed to fit any belt up to 2 Inches wide. It is fully hand stitched so you can be sure that when your Sheath it is looped through your belt it will always be there close at hand and ready for use. Our Sheaths should look just as good on the reverse as on the front all made to our high quality. This knife is not a 'pretty' knife but a fully functioning working tool designed to be used. Often whilst designing a knife, which is, let’s face it, essentially just a practical working tool, many Knife Makers will ignore the strength and durability of the Point in favour of creating a knife that has Eye Candy appeal. There's no denying that putting things in the dishwasher is a lot easier than hand-washing, but most knives need to be washed by hand. Robert Welch's Product Specialist told us "I always say good quality knives are like owning a Rolls Royce, you wouldn’t want to put it through a car wash. Kitchen knives can be easily rinsed after use and dried for maintaining the edge. Placing knives in the dishwasher is not terribly detrimental but will have an effect. Other more specialist knives include Chinese cook’s knives, palette knives and mezzalunas (a two-handled knife with a curved edge for chopping herbs). How important is the metal type?

It is important to note that a Sheath withouta Welt is an accident just waiting to happen. Making a sheath with no Welt reduced the manufacturing costs and thereby increases profitability, but will unavoidably guide, by virtue of the shape of the sheath, the cutting edge of that knife towards the unprotected stitch-line when the knife is being sheathed, or unsheathed. If the knife cuts into, or through, the sheath wall or stitch-line, it can cause serious damage to the sheath, but more importantly could cause the blade to seriously injure whoever is holding or wearing the sheath at the time. If you were having two knives you’d want the second to be some sort of paring knife, the Robert Welch Signature 8cm is my most favoured knife, great for peeling, turning vegetable and for all fruit and salad preparation. A few of these unconventional knife designs have utilized compressed gas. Ballistic knives, for example, have used compressed air or CO2 to fire a blade a short distance from the handle. Outside video games and movies, the effectiveness of ballistic knives is dubious to say the least. But there’s a second type of knife that uses compressed gas — the injection knife. The Spine has been precision ground along its entire length, to a sharp 90° angle that will enable you to easily and safely scrape sparks from any Ferrocerium Fire Steel, as well as shave the bark from saplings, create shavings from dry heartwood for fire lighting and scrape the fats and hair from animal skins. The Belly of the Blade has been designed with enough curve to allow the skinning of small animals without ruining the skin of the animal as well as the high possible risk of the Point cutting or piercing into the internal organs and contaminating the meat. They all have weighted handles, which not only gives a nice balance to the knives when in use but also ensures you get a good, clean cut. To keep the knives sharp, there is a removable two-stage ceramic sharpener in base for use with the non-serrated knives, though it’s worth noting that this isn’t suitable for serrated or ceramic blades, if you have any in your collection. These knives are not dishwasher safe, so you need to wash them by hand – but be careful they are sharp. Paring knife: Typically a smaller knife that can be used for everyday veggie peeling and paring fruit. In the hand, these knives are lightweight and comfortable, and the non-slip coating on the handle is a nice addition both for practicality and looks. For the price, they did an excellent job of cutting through soft to medium foods, though struggled a little when it came to cutting up squash. Nonetheless, if you’re on a budget and want to keep sharp tips away from tiny hands, we’d highly recommend this set.
