Grotesque (After the Gramme) is the third studio album by English band the Fall. Released on 17 November 1980, it was the band's first studio album on Rough Trade.Slates is best on the original two-fer CD, as is A Part of America, Therein. Listen to the drums on Hip Priest if you want to understand what the loudness war does. It's not a sonic holocaust, but there is more bite and life on the older mastering. Their twenty-fifth studio album, entitled Fall Heads Roll, was issued on 3 October 2005. The guitarist, bassist, and drummer all left the group acrimoniously during the US summer 2006 tour after just four dates. In a US radio interview, Smith described their departures as "the best thing that ever happened" to the Fall, although it was some months before he confirmed that they would not be returning. [27]

Whereas its little brother Hex Enduction Hour often unrightfully overshadows it, the energetic bile of Grotesque defines The Fall more than any other record. Mark E. Smith was never so literately paranoid, the call of popular success was never so far away, and the Fall were never so consistently brilliant. First associated with the late 1970s punk movement, the Fall's music underwent numerous stylistic changes, often concurrently with changes in the group's lineup. Nonetheless, their music has generally been characterised by an abrasive, repetitive guitar-driven sound, tense bass and drum rhythms, and Smith's caustic lyrics, [4] described by critic Simon Reynolds as "a kind of Northern English magic realism that mixed industrial grime with the unearthly and uncanny," voiced through a "one-note delivery somewhere between amphetamine-spiked rant and alcohol-addled yarn." [5] While the Fall never achieved widespread success beyond minor hit singles in the late 1980s and early 1990s, they have maintained a strong cult following.

The Fall have done many covers of the years – most successfully of the Kinks’ Victoria and R Dean Taylor’s There’s a Ghost in My House – but this one’s a bit special. By 1993, the music scene had changed dramatically as the rave generation took hold. A cover of the Chic Organization’s disco anthem – on The Infotainment Scan, which reached the top 10 and is the highest–charting Fall album ever – seems an unlikely vehicle for a renaissance, but so it proved. The original – a hit for Sister Sledge in 1979 – sounds like a hymn to clubby euphoria. However, with another new recruit – computer man Dave Bush – providing “techno shit”, Smith unearths a darker meaning to the phrase “lost in music” and pours thinly concealed scorn on those “caught in a trap” of empty-headed hedonism.
