About this deal

Most of us are familiar with the traditional tall sunflower withits large yellow daisy-like bloom, but there’s far more to sunflowers than that. They come in various forms, both short-lived annuals and longer-lived clump-forming perennials.

Other than where noted, they flower through most of the summer and are annuals. 1) Helianthus annuus It is of a branching type and shows off its incredible, one-of-a-kind flowers nearly all summer long. 17) H. annuus‘Sunbelievable Brown-Eyed Girl’ The large leaves are well known for being hairy and heart-shaped, whilst the flowers are huge at 25-30cm across. Once the plants are established, they can withstand high temperatures and near-drought conditions. But they’ll grow more easily if they receive that water. Jerusalem artichokes are also a type of perennial helianthus ( Helianthus tuberosus), and although grown for their edible tubers, they do also produce small sunny flowers on tall stems in late summer.Perennial sunflowers are best planted in spring or autumn, when the soil is warm and damp. They can also be planted in summer if bought in flower, although they will need regular watering to help them get established successfully. Technically qualifying as a dwarf variety at 75cm tall, ‘Sunsation Yellow’ boasts the plus point of a relatively long blooming season that goes well into autumn. This cultivar seems to be especially attractive to bees, butterflies and birds. 10) H. annuus‘Kong’ While ‘Russian Giant’ is the least tall of our giant sunflower selections at 2.5-3m tall, it produces truly giant flowers at 30cm across.

Reaching a staggering height of about 4.5m, which is taller than some trees, the aptly-named ‘Giraffe’ is a giant sunflower. But with a variety like this, when you want the plants to stay healthy throughout the blooming period and on into seed production, it’s important to keep them watered. For example, as the flowers are a source of nectar, they will draw butterflies and bees to your garden in abundance. When growth of the flower stalk stops and the flower is mature, the heliotropism also stops and the flower faces east from that moment onward. This eastward orientation allows rapid warming in the morning and, as a result, an increase in pollinator visits. [9] Sunflowers do not have a pulvinus below their inflorescence. A pulvinus is a flexible segment in the leaf stalks (petiole) of some plant species and functions as a 'joint'. It effectuates leaf motion due to reversible changes in turgor pressure, which occurs without growth. The sensitive plant's closing leaves are a good example of reversible leaf movement via pulvinuli.

A real plus point is that this giant cultivar is a branching type, so it bears multiple flowers on each stem. When they’re newly germinated, they’ll need a good soak every day that it doesn’t rain for at least a week or two. The plant has an erect rough-hairy stem, reaching typical heights of 3 metres (10 feet). The tallest sunflower on record achieved 9.17m (30ft 1in). [3] Sunflower leaves are broad, coarsely toothed, rough and mostly alternate; those near the bottom are largest and commonly heart-shaped. [4] Flower [ edit ]

Not only is this cultivar super tall, but its flowers are also massive, often 30cm in diameter or even more. Starting sunflowers off indoors gives the plants a head start, which is important if you want to grow really tall ones. However, you need space on a sunny windowsill or in a greenhouse for a month or more, until you can plant them out in early summer. Showy Sunflower’ is another option for those who prefer perennials and this species also has a clump-forming habit. A relatively new cultivar appearing around 2018, ‘Sunbelievable Brown Eyed Girl’ took the bronze medal at that year’s Chelsea Flower Show and it is easy to see why. 1 Rice, G. (2018b, September 28). Keep them on a sunny windowsill or in a greenhouseuntil late spring or early summer, then plant outside once the soil is warming up and there is no risk of frost. Harden themoff thoroughly first, to acclimatise them to outdoor conditions. This alignment results from heliotropism in an earlier development stage, the young flower stage, before full maturity of flower heads ( anthesis). [8] Young sunflowers orient themselves in the direction of the sun. At dawn the head of the flower faces east and moves west throughout the day. When sunflowers reach full maturity they no longer follow the sun, and continuously face east. Young flowers reorient overnight to face east in anticipation of the morning. Their heliotropic motion is a circadian rhythm, synchronized by the sun, which continues if the sun disappears on cloudy days or if plants are moved to constant light. [9] They are able to regulate their circadian rhythm in response to the blue-light emitted by a light source. [9] If a sunflower plant in the bud stage is rotated 180°, the bud will be turning away from the sun for a few days, as resynchronization with the sun takes time. [10] Though this cultivar has a narrowish profile, quite interestingly, it has the bonus of being a multi-stalked type, making it more of a typical garden plant. 4) H. annuus ‘Sunsation Yellow’ Oilseed flowers are grown for oil production and birdseed. Sunflower oil is low in saturated fats and doesn’t have a strong taste. It is growing in popularity due to its heart-healthy reputation. The reason is that it produces fantastic flowers that are of a riveting coppery red hue with a distinctly velvety sheen. 14) H. annuus‘Ruby Sunset’
