Samsung’s Exynos 990 chipset didn’t get utilized in the Fold 2, and that’s good news for everyone in the UK and other regions. The Exynos 990, found in the Note 20 series, outside of the US, showed weaker performance and battery life than Qualcomm’s chip in our testing.So we’re torn. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 remains obnoxiously expensive for a smartphone – it costs as much as two Samsung Galaxy S20 phones if you fashion your own hinge (please... don’t actually attempt that). Yet it fixes most of the first-gen limitations we complained about, courtesy of its larger Cover Display and improved durability. It has the features we wanted at a price no one asked for. Of course, your mileage will likely vary based on two factors: how much you use the 7.6-inch screen vs the less-power-hungry 6.2-inch Cover Display, and how often you have the 120Hz mode activated; Samsung’s adaptive screen refresh rate is smart, dialing things down to as little as 11Hz for simple tasks, but we found the (totally worth it) mode depleted our Fold 2 battery life a bit faster. The biggest changes to smartphone software in the last decade are happening right now, and that’s because foldable phones are pushing the idea of using multiple apps simultaneously. The functionality has existed on phones before, but the concept is fully realized on the Fold 2. On Geekbench 5, which measures overall performance, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 scored 3,193 on the mult-core portion. The Note 20 Ultra with the same chip scored a slightly higher 3,294 and the Asus ROG Phone 3 hit 3,393. The iPhone 11 Pro was fastest with 3,500. At 208g, it’s heavy, but again far more easy to wield than other super-phones. This home-brewed chip is roughly in the same performance ballpark as the Snapdragon 865, but Qualcomm’s chip is measurably faster and more efficient. The most futuristic phone of 2020
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 immediately makes a better impression than the Galaxy Fold because of its larger exterior display. You no longer feel like you're operating Android through a peep hole, and that's because the cover screen has grown from 4.6 inches to 6.2 inches. There’s also a secondary display with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. On the front of the phone, when the main display is folded away, you get to use a 6.23-inch Super AMOLED ‘Cover Display’. It’s only 816 x 1536 pixels and 60Hz, but it enables you to use the device as a ‘normal’ phone when you don’t need the full fold-out effect. Cameras But similarities with the Note 20 design stop there. Samsung shifts the fingerprint sensor from in-screen to the side-mounted power button, which makes sense, and doesn’t include an S Pen, even though a stylus would be fitting for a spacious 7.6-inch display. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 release date is Friday, September 18 in the US and UK. In Australia, the release date is September 25. We've yet to learn availability details for the UAE and other regions. Anecdotally, the battery life on the Z Fold 2 is pretty solid. I started using the phone at 10 am and after a day of heavy usage it had about 18% juice left at 10 pm.
speeds are going to vary by region and carrier, according to our tests in New York City. We experienced sub-6 ‘5G’ at 200Mbps on T-Mobile, and then, minutes later in the very same spot, much faster mmWave 5G at 1.6Gbps on Verizon. The tradeoff is that the slower sub-6 speeds worked indoors as well as outside, while mmWave required us to stand outside directly under a 5G antenna. The Fold 2 – like all 5G phones in 2020 – feels future-proofed more than it’s constantly super fast. Apps also have to be coded for Flex Mode, and third-party camera apps probably won't be. VSCO, for instance, just opens up into a big, full-screen viewfinder, which stays that way when the phone is folded. On the plus side, a useful setting allows you to choose specifically which apps should keep running when you open or close the phone. Samsung has equipped it with a larger 6.2-inch cover display which is certainly much better to use compared to its predecessor. The internal display has also been increased to 7.6-inches and not only that, it also gets 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Samsung has done away with all display notches in favor of an Infinity-O punch hole so that the bezel sizes could be reduced. As time has moved on, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has been largely superseded by the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra - integrated S Pen aside. Meanwhile there’s been nothing to take the place of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 as yet.

Flex mode adds versatility: Thanks to the cam mechanism in the hinge, you can open the display at various angles. Flex Mode is there to take advantage of that. For example, in the camera app, you’ll see the live previous up top and controls down below.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 sports a Snapdragon 865 Plus processor along with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage (UFS3.1). So we would expect similar performance to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.
Thanks to a ton of improvements, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is the best foldable phone yet and a productivity powerhouse
On our battery test, which involves continuous web surfing at 150 nits of screen brightness, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 lasted 10 hours and 10 minutes on the 60Hz display setting. That's not enough to make our list of best phone battery life, where are the handsets last longer than 11 hours. But given the size of the Z Fold 2's display that's pretty good endurance. As big as the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s screen is - and at 6.9-inches it’s as big as a traditional smartphone tends to get - the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s is bigger. Much bigger. Battery: Actual battery life varies by network environment, features and apps used, frequency of calls and messages, number of times charged, and many other factors.
