About this deal

A few comments about the discussion… Field testing a sleeping bag for relative/comparable warmth is an inherently subjective undertaking, so I eliminated as many variables as possible. While realizing that some people on BPL use low-rated R-value sleeping pads, for example, I used the same pads I always do. If I had used a lower-rated pad, I wouldn't have had a good comparative baseline. Also note that there have been some great threads correlating sleeping pad R-value to temperature & sleeping bag rating. The three main types of insulating fill in modern sleeping bags are down, water-resistant down, and synthetic insulation. Each of these fill types has its advantages and disadvantages, all of which we’ll cover below

The low end of acceptable down fill power for sleeping bags. The DriDown means it is treated to be hydrophobic (water resistant). More on sleeping bag insulation types in our Guide. If the Cosmic Down 20 isn’t quite what you need, here are some popular alternatives that our team has tested: Hoodless Sleeping Bags: Hoodless sleeping bags or quilts are more commonly an option for summer hikes, but those who feel overly restricted by a mummy-style bag with a tight hood might prefer to use a hoodless sleeping bag and sleep with a hat on to keep their dome and ears toasty throughout the night.

Analysis and Test Results

The material used in your sleeping bag’s shell or outer layer is important for two reasons: protection and durability; and, resistance to dampness and condensation. 1) Protection and durability What we don’t: Heavier and less compressible than mummy bags (although it’s a nice improvement from the past model).

That said, I was still warm overall and would take the Cosmic out again. Just have to shake, shake, shake it some more to get those feathers in line. Final Word This zipper is the entire length of the bag and built for use. Large pull tabs help to locate it in the night, but it is a little more delicate than we’d prefer. Just got this on sale from Campmor a few days ago, and thought I would share my experience with it. If you know you "sleep cold" or have plans for colder trips in the spring or fall, the Western Mountaineering UltraLite is the bag for you. With 17 ounces of 850+ fill power down and a legit draft collar, this is the warmest bag in our test. Our cold-sleeping lead tester used it at 12,000 feet in October and had no problems staying warm. At the same time, its full-length zipper and horizontal baffle construction provide ample options to shed heat and cool off on warmer nights. We slept comfortably in this bag across an expansive range of overnight temperatures from 10° to 55°F. It’s especially important to know them for those who don’t have so much experience in tourism. Let’s try to figure it out with specific examples and take a few sipid models: Kelty Cosmic down 20, Marmot Trestles 30, The North Face Women’s Cat’s Meow 20 and Klymit KSB 20. These sleeping bags are roughly the same class, so the comparison will be correct. To understand the variety of models, you need to distinguish a few basic principles. Purpose of the sleeping bag

I've only given it 4 stars for the moment because I haven't truly tested the performance of it quite yet and plan on updating this review with further thoughts once I use it properly. There’s no definitive answer to this one, and in most cases, the weight of your future sleeping bag will be determined by finding the ideal weight-to-warmth ratio, basing your calculations on how heavy a bag you’re willing to carry and how much warmth you will need to sleep soundly and safely where (and when) you intend to do your camping. Kelty also offers the Cosmic Down construction in 40 degree and 0 degree versions. The 40 degree is great for summer use, and the 0 degree works well in sub-freezing weather. While both of these will work, we find the versatility and weight of the Cosmic Down 20 to be the best bet for most people. You can find the other versions below.
