that actually wasn't a joke (which you will get if you have read the story or seen Memento, the movie-branch of this story). It would not be an exaggeration to say that the practice of memento mori has changed my life. I began meditating on my death daily in 2017 and sharing online about how my journey was impacting me. I never imagined how much interest this would generate both within the Catholic faith community and beyond. People began asking me and my sisters for resources to meditate on death regularly. And since the Daughters of St. Paul’s charism is to use the media to spread the Gospel, we were well-equipped to publish resources on memento mori for people. Stanley Brandes. I grew up in a Catholic family, but I had a natural skepticism that led me at the age of five to first doubt whether God really existed. My skepticism coupled with my wrestling with the problem of suffering led me to turn to atheism at the age of fourteen. I was a materialist atheist for over a decade. a b Literally 'remember (that you have) to die', Oxford English Dictionary, Third Edition, June 2001. The only way out of this mess, of course, is to take steps to ensure that you control the idiots that you become. To take your chain gang, hand in hand, and lead them. The best way to do this is with a list. In the year 170, the most powerful man in the world sat down to write. Not to an audience or for publications, but to himself, for himself. His name was Marcus Aurelius, the emperor of Rome. Miraculously, these writings survive–and contained within them is a profound prescription for wisdom, justice, discipline and courage. Below you will find a selection of some of the best Memento Mori quotes from the great Stoics…

Memento mori was the salutation used by the Hermits of St. Paul of France (1620–1633), also known as the Brothers of Death. [21] It is sometimes claimed that the Trappists use this salutation, but this is not true. [22] In Puritan America [ edit ] Thomas Smith's Self-Portrait The most interesting part of that for me is that audiences seem very unwilling to believe the stuff that Teddy [Pantoliano] says at the end and yet why? I think it's because people have spent the entire film looking at Leonard's photograph of Teddy, with the caption: "Don't believe his lies." That image really stays in people's heads, and they still prefer to trust that image even after we make it very clear that Leonard's visual recollection is completely questionable. It was quite surprising, and it wasn't planned. What was always planned was that we don't ever step completely outside Leonard's head, and that we keep the audience in that interpretive mode of trying to analyze what they want to believe or not. For me, the crux of the movie is that the one guy who might actually be the authority on the truth of what happened is played by Joe Pantoliano ... who is so untrustworthy, especially given the baggage he carries in from his other movies: he's already seen by audiences as this character actor who's always unreliable. I find it very frightening, really, the level of uncertainty and malevolence Joe brings to the film. [76] Best film list appearances [ edit ] Year The book is a journey through Advent, right? Why do you think a book like this is important to read during Advent? For starters, I like many of Christopher Nolan's movies very much. The adaptation of his brother's story is, in my opinion, one of those undervalued masterpieces. Saint Benedict exhorts his monks in his Rule to “keep death daily before one’s eyes.” The Book of Sirach also urges, “In all you do, remember the end of your life, / and then you will never sin” (7:36). Inspired by these exhortations in our faith tradition, our sisters at Pauline Books and Media worked with the wonderful people at Word Among Us to publish a perpetual, daily memento mori desk calendar with quotes from Scripture, Church Fathers, saints, and other contemporary thinkers about the importance of remembering our death. Our sisters produce resources like this because death could come for any of us at any time. But we cannot prepare for death without thinking about it regularly.
