About this deal

The administration then tried to instigate a disciplinary because of this, saying that even though he followed the rules, he made people uncomfortable by asking them not to talk about this, which again, was a completely made up rule and massively exposed the gaping double standard. Because of this, another disciplinary had been launched against John, but this time at a way higher level… taking place at the uni level rather than the school level. While Christian was in front of the disciplinary panel, he explained that his social media activity was just being used as a way to dismiss his own complaint, which a few on the panel fortunately sympathised with. They ended up not taking action against him and instead told him to just watch what he posts on social media as it could offend someone. He was also required to do community service in the library. Let me remind you that this was entirely over what he posted on his OWN PERSONAL social media in his SPARE TIME. von der Grün, Howl Like the Wolves: Growing Up in Nazi Germany (New York: W. Morrow, 1980), 118–19. The counter-protesters walked down Upper Brooke Street and arrived at the Schuster Building in the park. It was here where they greeted the first three members of SAT to arrive, including the group’s founder, James Harvey, and a guest speaker, Tom Shaw. On October 20th 2021, James was asked to join Voice of Wales and become a part-time reporter, under the condition that his priority is Students Against Tyranny, James agreed and it was announced over Telegram. James has since worked as a reporter for Voice of Wales, and has done many videos ranging from the DVLA strikes, to discrimination, to Remeeces Music Video "BOOSTAH".

We started Students Against Tyranny as a means of bringing like-minded students together, especially as having these neurodivergent beliefs can be very isolating at times, with many being scared to talk about their opinions for fear of being labelled. Labelled in a way that shuts you up and potentially “ruins” your credibility among your peers. Unfortunately, being labelled in such ways (as a fascist, Nazi, racist, etc) fortifies your future as an outcast, but overall this should signify that they were never real friends in the first place. What transpired is far greater than what we ever imagined, we created an organised network of individuals who have become great friends and have gotten involved in some fantastic activism work. Students Against Tyranny was also used as a way to assist students legally – as opposed to just focusing on the social and active part of it – in times of need, for example, when NHS university students were told they could no longer study or go on hospital placements unless they complied with the draconian “must be jabbed” conditions. When we first heard about this, we were absolutely outraged, and thus after many sleepless nights the legal team put together a fantastic array of legal letters to aid in these situations. For the majority of students, this worked, however, unfortunately for some it did not. According to the Manchester Mill, Christian complained to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education, an independent university ombudsman, who upheld the university’s decision to exclude him. Why did other young people begin to drop out of the Hitler Youth? How do you account for their feelings? So what was really going on? As it later turned out, some of John’s fellow students were trying to bait him into making offensive statements, so they could report him to the university administration and lodge a complaint against him. Christian responded to this question rationally stating, “well why are more women in nursing? Why are more men bin collectors? It’s just how society is. Different genders on average have different interests.” Unsurprisingly, this was again used against him at a disciplinary meeting to show that he was ‘discriminatory and prejudiced against women’, however, like they did previously, they had twisted what John said to fit their narrative and attempted to punish him. Because of this, Christian rightly decided to complain to a higher power within the university. During this complaint, he’d made references to files in his GDPR request and them not allowing him to attend many meetings as direct proof that many lecturers, research professors, administrators, etc were not only trying to get students to make complaints about him but just conspiring to have him taken off the PhD program and were attempting to persecute him into leaving.

They confront the manager who listens to their concerns. She can be heard offering to remove the product from the shelves. Though SAT deny they have any affiliation with ethno-nationalists or other out-right racists and homophobes, the arguments they use their ‘free speech’ to make have everything to do with them. At least, that’s the view of the counter-protesters. Harrison, Rhodri (2021-09-21). "Students spreading Covid misinformation could face discplinary action". WalesOnline . Retrieved 2022-01-27.He insisted that his use of such language was to describe the “public display” of sexuality “in front of children”. if there was an increase in hostilities against white people as a consequence of the fallout from BLM or if the universities report was seen to increase racial tensions, then he wouldn’t suffer any reprisals… the fact that he’s not white meant he could say bad things about British history with no risk of a violent reprisal against him.” John was regularly invited to the pub on Friday evenings by other PhD students. At the time, he was unaware of their true intentions and enjoyed socialising with them over a few beers. Though he was always cautious not to drink too much since he was heavily involved in sports at the university and had training on Saturday mornings and was also aware that he was being asked probing questions at these events and did not want to put himself in a situation where he might say something regrettable.

I asked Shaw how he felt about the University of Manchester’s treatment of rent-striking students and their freedom of expression – arguably one of the most prevalent free-speech issues facing students here at the moment. Students Against Tyranny had labelled Covid as “rebranded flu” and told people to “wake up”, advising 15-21 year olds to refuse vaccination. After the whole pro-Brexit ordeal, John noticed a suspicious increase in the amount of students attempting to engage him in political discourse, which yes, sounds brilliant, debate is exactly what we need, however, their true motives behind this were rather sinister and John himself was oblivious to what was actually going on. I brought our regional banner today to show solidarity. We feel very strongly about racism and anybody who tries to whip up racist hate, and we understand that Students Against Tyranny are trying to do exactly that.Contrary to Hitler’s hopes, membership in the Hitler Youth did not make all boys and girls ardent Nazis for life. Hans Scholl, who later founded the White Rose resistance movement with his sister Sophie and was executed by the Nazis, was at one point a member of the Hitler Youth (see reading, Protests in Germany in Chapter 9). His sister Inge Scholl describes how Hans slowly became disillusioned with the group: Harvey keenly told me that SAT would not support ‘ethno-nationalists’, saying: “That’s not our values.”

Christian also remembered this one guy in particular, of which he initially considered himself to be good friends with. Something worth noting (the reason why will become apparent later) is that this guy was gay. Something else about this guy is that he would become extremely drunk, and very emotional and would start asking John about various different things. John was attending one of the University of Manchester’s weekly seminars, where experts were invited to give lectures on various aspects of particle physics, including theory, prediction, and experimentation. He described the seminars as covering a wide range of topics. Unfortunately, during one session, a speaker made racist comments about how there were too many white men in physics, and how that number needed to be reduced drastically. This was deeply troubling for John, who regularly attended seminars with 50 to 100 research professors, students, and PhD candidates. During a seminar discussion on Brexit, someone in the audience had announced that John had voted to leave the European Union. This person’s identity was unknown to John. After the phone call had concluded, John returned to the meeting but having missed most of it, didn’t know what had been said. Christian wasn’t really taking this disciplinary that seriously either, as compared to previous ones, the accusations in this one, though they were all fabricated/twisted, were completely miniscule. They are posing as ‘free speech activists’ but actually they want to create division, transphobia, racism. As a union and as activists, we won’t stand for it. A spokesperson for the University of Wales said: “The university is aware of comments made by an individual on social media who appears to be linked to our community. Such views do not reflect the position of the University. We have in place a Student Code of Conduct and expect all our students to respect and abide by our regulations.”I respect your right to an opinion but I would prefer that you would not talk about this near me as I find it offensive and I obviously would like to respond to this and debate you, but if I do that there’s a high chance someone will report me and say that I said something offensive so I can not risk engaging in this conversation so I would prefer that you just not talk about it”. Once the protest wound down, I spoke to one of SAT’s guest speakers, Tom Shaw, a dentistry student at Newcastle University. Above: A supporter of SAT holds up copies of The Light, a Germany based publication that promotes conspiracies and has links to far-right groups such as the Reichsburg movement. The paper has recently been the subject of a BBC Radio 4 series called ‘Marianna in Conspiracyland’) But some time later a peculiar change took place in Hans; he was no longer the same. Something disturbing had entered his life. . . . His songs were forbidden, the leader had told him. And when he had laughed at this, they threatened him with disciplinary action. Why should he not be permitted to sing these beautiful songs? Only because they had been created by other peoples? He could not understand it, and this depressed him, and his usual carefree spirit began to wane. On the 13th September 2021, after seeing his success, UNN (Unity News Network) anchor, David Clews, arranged for James to come on his live to do an interview about his plans for Students Against Tyranny, in the live one of those plans discussed was to have Student Representatives, an idea which, for the most part, they have succeeded in. [4] Students Against Tyranny have so far got 47 Student Reps in universities stretched across the UK. [5] Not too long after this, an article was written about James by Wales Online, though they didn't mention him by name. The article was titled "University of Wales Trinity St David's warns that students spreading Covid misinformation could face disciplinary action". [6] The article states that the first year student has started a group "urging those aged between 15-21 to not get jabbed" and that the university "condemns" the actions of this student and that people should get "vaccinated." James later responds to this article by saying that he's not "antivax" and that he's instead "pro medical choice."
