I’ve done all the usual Surrey hill trails on it, from summer lightning to the more technical stuff on pitch hill. With only minimal weight reduction on the polished raised logo faceplate, it takes the scales over 200g. That gives an ultra-light, instantly reactive steering feel that’s incredible for accurate line and traction tweaking. A word of caution: if you’re tinkering with any of the bolts of your stem, make sure they are only tightened to the manufacturer’s recommended torque setting.

stem length Bike stems explained: how to choose the best stem length

You can also adjust the angle of your handlebar by rotating it in the stem clamp, assuming your bike has a conventional setup with a separate handlebar and stem. However, the stem has a significant effect on your bike’s geometry and, as a result, the handling and your ride position. The width and amount of backward sweep to your bars are also significant factors, because they will alter how close to the steering axis your hands are. Truth be told, not everyone digs this look, but if you do, we can safely say that this stem is really, really good from a performance point of view.

The bar and steerer clamping sections of the stem also intersect to create an effective length of just over 20mm. When we talk about stem standards here, we’re primarily talking about compatibility with the streerer tube on your bike (measured in inches), but also the handlebar clamp (measured in millimetres). We concentrated mostly on shorter reach units as that’s the most common upgrade switch for more responsive, lighter feeling steering. I still have to weight the front if I really want to aggressively flick the front wheel over in certain turns but I will not put super chunky tires on 'downcountry' bike.

A full range of sizes is backed up with a 10-year guarantee, and the Syntace range also includes super light XC options, more affordable designs, and even a unique angle-and-reach-adjustable handlebar and stem combo. Stainless steel hardware ensures everything stays in place and looks great, regardless of mud-blasting washes or rainforest climates. Carbon fibre is also sometimes used for oversized stems to improve stiffness – a design sometimes seen on the bikes of top-level sprinters. Obviously, you need a long reach for the super-short stem not to feel cramped on your bike, but if you like properly direct reactions, this is the way to go.

Mountain bike stems have got progressively shorter, following the trend for longer, slacker geometry. As a result, fine-tuning the stem can be one way to tweak the handling of your bike – but remember, your stem doesn’t exist in isolation and changing the stem length will also impact your position on the bike. Although you can provoke some movement if you really wrench on wide bars the broad clamp means it’s solid enough for most riders and it’s definitely one of the few obviously light stems we’d be happy with full gas.
