About this deal

it would be nice (this year perhaps for its 40th anniversary) to get a deluxe edition like for the studio albums. Japanese Whispers is a great way for casual Cure fans to get The Walk on an acceptable-sounding cheap old CD, because the one on the Staring at the Sea CD has that terrible dropout (all versions I think I read? Got a copy of this recently, and the mastering is outstanding: crystal clarity, detailed, and punchy, and it sounds quite a bit better than my old 80s US Sire pressing. definitely a departure from the dark depths of Pornography - something Robert Smith clearly needed to do after that album. The band were obviously in a fragile state of mind when recording, as the eight tracks making up this odd compilation of non-album singles sound immediately less concerned than the gothic grandeur of The Cure’s last few albums, opting for quirky synths and silly pop lyrics over slow-building, atmospheric substance of yesteryear.

The songs were recorded when the band was in a transitional phase after bassist Simon Gallup left following a tour to promote the previous album, Pornography. After the band had imploded (and dropped down to only two permanent members) from their increasingly depressing albums Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography, upbeat pop songs like “Let’s Go To Bed”, “The Walk” and “The Lovecats” reinvented the band from gloomy doomsters to pop sensations seemingly overnight. As Robert Smith purchased a new calendar for the year 1983, things had begun to look rather bleak for The Cure. But those Walk songs sound awful, which is disappointing, especially since for me, The Walk EP is probably my very favorite Cure release, and I kind of wanted to have those songs on CD. There is also a persistent "swoooosh" sound that can be heard between all tracks due to this being a picture disc.

Japanese Whispers - Wikipedia

A lot has been said about all of The Cure's cd releases, but poring over the many threads, one question I have doesn't seem to really be answered to my satisfaction. The best way I can describe it is that the Sire LP (while not a stellar pressing) had this airiness and very pleasing definition/detail in the higher frequencies, whereas the WG CD sounded as if that high frequency had been crudely switched off. Which of the various Japanese Whispers cds is considered to be the definitive one, or at least the preferred one?

Japanese Whispers is a mini-album that collects previously-released songs on various singles from November 1982 to November 1983. The singles marked a change of direction in The Cure’s sound, so it’s convenient then, that fans were offered an opportunity to collect the aforementioned singles (and their respective b-sides) in one, neat bundle entitled ‘Japanese Whispers’, to investigate this unassumingly important chapter in the bands eclectic catalogue.

Update: I exchanged above copy for another from Rhino, and this second copy is flat and has only one skip at the start of "The Walk," rather than two, so that might be as good as it's going to get. During this time, the band’s fanbase went from went from ‘intense, menacing, psychotic goths’ to a more mainstream audience and the band’s catalog began selling again.Let’s Go To Bed’ is a strong single - a funky bass line, odd but lovable synth bleeps, and a genuinely infectious chorus make for a little belter. Those CDs were too loud but in every other respect sound miles better than the original japanese whispers CD. JesusChris - Fair enough, i get what you mean - this record has sentimental value to you, so that's why you're so fond, i dig. In 1982, bassist Simon Gallup left following the Pornography tour and musician Lol Tolhurst switched from drums to the keyboards.
